Worcester is one of the most popular cities within the state of Massachusetts and remains in the county named after itself, Worcester County. Like many other towns and cities within Massachusetts, Worcester was named after a region within England known as Worcester, Worcestershire. Worcester is an incredibly large and productive city that has over 206,00 members of its population, which makes this city the runner up for largest city in the state of Massachusetts right behind Boston. Worcester is located more inland within the center of Massachusetts 40 miles west of Boston and a little more at around 42 miles west of Sound and Visions Media located within Revere. Due to its huge significance as a working city and its location near central Massachusetts, Worcester has been given the title of “Heart of the Commonwealth”.
The city of Worcester was a lot like many other cities and towns as it was a heavily industrial oriented city. Their focus on industrialization was made possible by their railroad connection and the powerful Blackstone Canal, which helped in the production of not only textiles and wires, but also machine parts and machinery all together. Worcester was a very successful and growing city until World War II when manufacturing began to slow at a rapid rate. The city did not recover from this population and economic decline until about the 1990’s. At this time was when new immigrants worked towards bettering the city in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, and the growth of higher education. Although the effect of World War II stood for a very long time, Worcester has seen an immense population growth at just below 30% since about the early 1980’s.
